Table 1 Rationale for the process components

From: From gaps to guidelines: a process for providing guidance to bridge evidence gaps

Step in process

Rationale

1. Identification of priorities by PWLE of MOD-SEV TBI and Guideline end-users

Ensures that the guideline responds to the needs of the users

2. Involvement of diverse multidisciplinary Expert Panels, including PWLE

Ensures that the guideline recommendations are comprehensive and consider multiple perspectives and different contexts

3. Compilation, review, and evaluation of published MOD-SEV TBI evidence

Ensures that the recommendations are informed by the most current evidence

4. Identification of gaps in the published literature

Ensures review of available literature against the priorities identified in Step 1 to identify gaps where consensus recommendations are required

5. Formulation of recommendations, rigorous grading of available evidence and formal voting

Ensures that recommendations can stand up to external review and through the voting process a high bar of consensus agreement is reached

6. Creation of knowledge translation/mobilization tools

Ensures that the need for practical tools such as algorithms, decision rules or checklists is met to facilitate easy integration into practice

7. Publication of the updated Living Guideline

Enables the timely incorporation of new evidence in rapidly evolving areas, ensuring that practitioners receive the most up-to-date evidence-based recommendations
